How I got the Photo: Rainy Days

Looking for a little messy fun? This can be done inside (with some cleanup) or you can head outside in a nice shady spot.

I created Rainy Days in the studio with Emily, it was such a fun, but messy shoot with Emly Reinhard (@emreinhard93) in the studio on a wet, cold Winter's afternoon. This was a bit of a bucket list item, re-creating a coffee shop scene shot through a window on a rainy day. But all from the comfort of my heated studio! A bit of Perspex, some water, a LOT of towels on the floor lol and voila.

Setting the scene

I used a seamless black paper backdrop and an old table and bentwood chair. For props we used an old book and a coffee mug. I wanted to keep it simple. My model was rugged up in a bright red jacket (just to make it pop) and a peak hat. But you could do more casual, more formal, Summer or Spring. Lighting was a Zhiyun Molus G200 and Phottix 65cm softbox/beauty dish. positioned my light in a Paramount position, 450 angle from the model, up quite high, and angled down. The bottom of the lantern was roughly level with Emily's head. Just enough to stop the light from reflecting in the perspex (Acrylic) 'window'.

I used a 600mm x 900mm sheet of clear acrylic suspended from the roof. I drilled holes in the corner of the acrylic and used gallery painting hooks to suspend it. I tried spraying water to simulate rain and then poured water from a bottle onto the surface. The acrylic beads up far more than glass would. This was set in front of the table and model with lots of towels on the floor to catch the drips.

Camera gear and settings

Camera - Sony A7RV, Lens - Tamron 28-75mm and Thypoch Simera 28mm. ISO640, f/2.8, 1/400sec I switched between focusing on my model and the water drops.
