A Quirky Bike Sculpture Adventure in Omeo

A Quirky Bike Sculpture Adventure in Omeo

Do you ever explore charming small towns filled with unique attractions? Imagine pedalling or even just walking through picturesque landscapes and stumbling upon whimsical bike sculptures scattered throughout the streets. Welcome to Omeo, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Victoria’s High Country.

Welcome to Omeo

We recently visited Omeo, located in the Alpine High Country of country Victoria (Australia). With its quaint shops, friendly locals, and breathtaking scenery, it offers a unique experience for tourists of all types. With a big focus on bicycles, apparently. From leisurely rides along the Omeo River to challenging mountain climbs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the most delightful aspects of Omeo I think is its collection of quirky bike sculptures. These artistic creations, scattered throughout the town, add a touch of whimsy and creativity to the local landscape. Made from old bicycles, motorbikes, quad bikes and timber. Adorned with odd bits of clothing and props and even some abstract metal sculptures. Each piece tells a unique story about the town and its people. They even have their own Tour de France (or should I say Omeo?).

Someone or perhaps quite a few people were involved in the creation of these bikes. And what a way to recycle all sorts of bits and pieces discarded by others. Truly wonderful to see.

Some of my favorite bike sculptures

  • The spectator family: This vibrant sculpture features a spectator family with a baby and a dog

  • The Ambo: A nod to nurses and medics of the past I’m sure. It’s quaint and quirky and quite humorous

  • The paparazzi: There is actually more than one. But this guy really caught my eye, dangling of the back of a quad bike, capturing the action shots.

As you explore Omeo, take the time to discover these hidden gems and appreciate the artistry and creativity behind each sculpture. These unique creations add a touch of magic to the town and make it a truly unforgettable destination. The best way to see these sculptures is on foot. The town is actually pretty small, so it doesn’t take too long, but totally worth exploring.

I went for a walk with my trusty Sony A7RV and my Tamron 28-75mm lens and captured as many as I could.

Have you ever visited Omeo or have any favorite quirky towns to share?
