What’s out your front door?

Have you ever really stopped and looked at what’s out your front door? Or even your backdoor? Without ever leaving your property, sometimes it’s worth having a second look at what marvels you have. And not just for macro photography either.

Look for hidden treasures

I recently had a portrait shoot. It had a Spring theme (well it is currently Spring Down Under). Right outside the studio and my very own front door, I have not one but two weeping cheery blossoms, and they are in full bloom. Sure I know they are there and we took a few photos in front of it. Lovely. Granted I can’t use this all the time as it only blooms for a few weeks every year, but I have never used it before and I have no idea why?

Look beyond the mundane

What really spoke to me, creatively and artistically, was the shots I captures when my model stood under the tree. The light was filtered just gorgeous. It created the perfect soft spring backdrop and it gave my model something to interact with. This is literally just a few feet from my front door. The timber panelling is my front porch!

The light was soft and lovely, almost like a halo behind her. Sure it had a slight green tinge to it, which I left in, as I really liked the feel of it. Using an aperture of f/2.8 I could blur out the windows (camera left) of my house. I only used natural light, as to be honest in this small space I couldn’t get a reflector in and a flash was too much.

This year I really will be sad once the blooms are gone. Such a perfect spot for portraits. Remember your only limit is your imagination.
