Using a flash with flowers - indoors

There is no secret to the fact that I adore photographing flowers, almost as much as people. Flowers are often easier subjects, they don't move (unless it's windy) and will stand or sit for hours, indeed days, without complaint. But when it's dark or very overcast, capturing beautiful flowers can be a little tricky. This is where using a flash, especially indoors really can be just a touch of magic.

Look at pretty much any of my previous articles and I will tell you natural light is great for still life photography. And it is. It’s free, it’s beautiful and easy to work with. But…it’s not always available. One thing I have learnt over the last 18 months is you need to be flexible. So how to shoot still life with studio strobes if that’s all you have available?

Should I get a strobe or Speedlight

This was a recent dilemma I faced. I currently have older Bowens Strobes in the studio and while there is nothing actually wrong with them, the recycle time was too slow and I had found they were continually misfiring with my Sony a7RIII. I adore getting my “spook” on for Halloween. Sadly this year, I had planned several really cool themes that may have to be put on hold until next year. Being in lockdown for yet another three weeks in Australia means I won’t be able to shoot for the entire month of October like I normally do.
